There are some 'secretarial' activities which I do on a time-available basis for 20% off or $68 per hour. These activities include, for example, word processing of worksheets into appendices (e.g., focus group material) and data entry of small data sets.

When I have some idea of the scope of the project (particularly the number and type of questions in the survey and your desires for significance analysis and reporting), I can estimate an approximate total number of hours for the project.

It is not unusual for a first-time client to be unsure about this arrangement. For first-time clients, I am willing to offer a cap on the maximum number of hours, and unless you change what you want from me, I will not charge above that amount of hours, regardless of how much time it takes to fulfill your needs.

All my regular clients feel comfortable with me charging by the hour because I take pride in both efficiency and 'stopping the clock' when I make stupid errors and the like.
